today's question comes from Miami , Florida Daniel asks Matt do the good , guys still stand the chance were a small , company that hired an SEO firm that we , though twas legit but destroyed our , rankings with spam blinks'vie tried , everything but nothing helps what can a , company with good intentions do okay , who you're we were trying to decide how , sassy to be when we were answering this , question because essentially you're , saying do the good guys stand a chance , we spammed and we got caught and so , we're not ranking and if you take step , back if you were to look at it from , someone else'perspective you might , consider yourself the good guys but you , spammed so the other people might , consider you a bad guy and so the fact , that you got caught men hey other good , guys who did't spam can rank higher so , from their perspective things would be , going well so you're kind of tying those , two together do the good guys stand a , chance , and we spammed so I think the good guys , do stand a chance and we try hard to , make sure that the good guys stand a , chance give them a good information , trying to make sure that they can get , information in webmaster tools , resources all sorts of free information , and and and things that they could do , and lots of advice but the good guys , stand a chance if they don't spam right , hits so my advice is you might ha veto , go through a difficult process of , reconsideration request and disavowing , links or whatever Otis you need to do , getting links off the web to clean , things up but the fact is Google is , getting better at fighting spam the gap , between what you could get away with and , what Google was saying you could get , away with is getting smaller all the , time so our advice has been the same , great user experience you know make sure , people link to you because you'vie got a , fantastic site come up with something , compelling and the number of people who , can push that envelope and get away with , it is getting smaller and smaller over , time so I absolutely believe good guys , can stand a chance and small sites and , small businesses can stand a chance but , I think you know this is May W by the , time you get to the end of the summery , think more and more people will be , saying okay you stand a chance but don't , start out going tithe black hat forums , trying to spam , trying to do high jinks and tricks , because that sort of technique is going , to be less likely to work going forward , and so ye sit can take long longer to , build those links that are harder to get , but they're more likely to stand the , test of time and so I would put Little , bit of effort into thinking about how do , you get those hard links not just how do , you get the fast links the easy links , the black hat links the spam links , because we will be doing everything we , can to return the best high quality , pages and search results to users and if , you are the ones generating those pages , we would like to return your high , quality stuff but we also don't want to , encourage spam and so we're continuing , to take strong action on it we're , continuing to enforce those policies , strongly good luck I hope you are able , to get out of your existing predicament , and in the future please tell people , before you sign up with an SEO ask for , references do some research ask them to , explain exactly what they're going to do , if they tell you they know me and they , have secret in with the web spam team , you should scream and run away , immediately , you know if they will tell you what , they're doing in clear terms and it , makes sense and it dozen'make you feel , a little you know uneasy then that's a , much better sign but we'll keep working , on things on our side and I hope you , keep working on doing white hat great , original wonderful compelling things on , your side and then we'll return the best , set of search results to users
